Activities

Catechism (including Confirmation)

The general coordinator is Beatrice Nijeboer:
Classes meet on Saturday mornings, at 9am, in the Parish Centre (and across the road at Maryvale College). Now that the Saturday morning Mass time has changed to 8am, parents and catechism pupils can begin their Saturday with Holy Mass, then the children can — after a short break — go on to their catechism classes.

Confirmation classes meet on Thursday evenings at 6.30pm in the Parish Centre.

Youth

8 young people went to go to World Youth Day in Rio in 2013.  They are Pierre van Horick, Michael Tharcisse , Peter Okonkwo , Joshua Harvey, Refilwe Motseta, Gugu (Chantelle) Nkosi , Erica Williams and Angela Rademeyer and they were accompanied by Fr Simon Donnelly  who had been involved in their preparation for this momentous opportunity.

They departed Johannesburg on 13 July for Sao Paulo and spent 4 days with families at the Santo Amaro parish where they were involved in parish events, did some sight-seeing and experienced authentic Brazilian culture. From there they travelled to Aparecida where the Basilica of the National Shrine of Our Lady Aparecida is located.  They brought home a statuette of Our lady of Aparecida which is currently circulating among families in the parish.

Finally, from 23- 28 July the official WYD events in Rio took place with an expected 3 million pilgrims under the watchful eye of Christ the Redeemer on Corcovado!

The program included catechesis sessions, daily mass and the main events with our Holy Father.  Pope Francis  celebrated the opening mass on Copacabana beach, which was also be the location for the Stations of the cross. WYD came to a close with the all night Saturday vigil of Eucharistic Adoration under the stars at the Campus Fidei and the closing mass the following morning.

The youth had a full day to explore Rio before a bus trip back to Sao Paulo and return on 31 July. We  continue to pray that this pilgrimage will  continue to bear fruit in the lives of the young people concerned as well as in our Community. Currently Joshua and  Gugu (Chantelle) Nkosi have joined the Readers Ministry and Peter Okonkwo  is attending the PPC meetings to help keep open lines of communication.

Youth Alpha which comes to a close on Friday 4th April has been a resounding success and we look forward to hearing more from our young people.

The next WYD is scheduled to take place in Poland in 2016

All are welcome. For registration please contact Ivor Glendinning 082 497 5776.
